I took my first test in 1973 in Puerto Rico, and when I moved to New York in 83, all I had to take was a written test and that was it.

In 1985 I rode my KZ-900 from Brooklyn to Phoenix Az to attend Motorcycle Mechanics Institute, without motorcycle insurance. Upon graduation a year later, I rode back to Brooklyn also without insurance. I was fortunate that I didn't get involved into an accident the entire year. Demand for used gear is on the rise as people take more and more pride in finding a new life for gear rather than ponying up top dollar for something fresh off a factory line. Geartrade is a trusted shop for buying & selling gears for men & women.Web journal https://www.blogger.com/profile/15000026684065942593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5950664143576637249.post-44620429256667535752024-01-05T11:43:35.186-06:002024-01-05T11:43:35.186-06:00The many counter-opinions listed here prove at lea...The many counter-opinions listed here prove at least one thing, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." I haven't followed this post for a while and catching up on it has been entertaining and enlightening. Lee Einer's 2007 bike with "a little over 10,000 miles" is pretty much a barely used motorcycle, for example. It's almost broken in averaging about 833 miles a year, which is less activity that I put on my bicycles at 75-years-old (me, not the bicycle). And if you can't "scrape the pegs" on this bike, you belong on a trike. Even leaning half-way off of the bike, the pegs scrape under any sort of serious turn.

A.C. Day's comments reminded me of that test riding experience for the first time in a half-dozen years. His opinion that the GV650 "is just about the best looking bike ever and great value second (or third or forth) hand" is at least honest. I, admittedly and from the start, told both the dealer and the distributor that I don't like cruisers. If you chase a little of the review's history in this blog, you'll see the now-unemployed-in-motorsports rep somehow thought he would bullshit his way past handing me a different bike than the one the magazine employed me to review: the GT650R. No chance I would have volunteered to ride the GV650 and even less chance my editor would have asked me to do that review.

Say what you want about Hyosung's products, but there is a reason their list of dealerships in 2024 is nonexistent. There is also a reason that every bike listed for sale (for example here: https://www.smartcycleguide.com/hyosung-gv_650-motorcycles-for-sale) has about as little use (or way less) as Mr. Einer's. I was feeling pretty lame for only having put 1200 miles on my used TU250X until I started looking at how little Hyosung 650s are ridden. T.W. I think it is just about the best looking bike ever and great value second (or third or forth) hand - just my opinion. I really think you should have tried the pegs in the further back setting as your legs look too short for the forward position. I am fuckin' old and will only progress to "really old" from here out.) I'm currently doing as much as I can motivate myself to do in an effort to avoid knee replacement. My doc's clinical description of my "deranged internal right knee" pretty much put me on notice that I better start taking care of what remains of that hinge or go through 6 miserable months of post-surgical rehab.

I think we're both old enough that felling sorry for ourselves is close to hilarious. I suspect you, like me, know more than a few people who have gone down the tubes at a lot younger age. However, when we talk about possible upcoming spring, summer, or fall projects or winter trips, Mrs. Day and I both start the discussion with "if we're still alive" and we're being optimistic. T.W. I had a late 80's TY350 that is, still, the only motorcycle I've ever sold that I wish I'd kept. T.W. The RL always started and ran better than the TY without fouling plugs and etc, i think due to the RL electronic ignition vs TY points&condenser. Years later he had to painstakingly rehab his steel tank while my aluminum tank held gas fine. Suzuki got some things right. Btw, we both still have our 1st loves that run, and have new (haha) 2004 Sherco and Scorpas (yamaha got the engine right 30 years later).Rickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00863922134759684437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5950664143576637249.post-84701573994247184022023-12-05T05:16:27.190-06:002023-12-05T05:16:27.190-06:00Great story as usual Thomas. I prefer the word transition but that's just me being anal. In any event, we have sufficient interests to largely avoid boredom. With my recent knee replacement, I'm working hard on flexibility so that I can get out on the e-mountain bike again. I'm just hoping that the heart murmur which is currently being investigated doesn't spoil plans for an ongoing active life. I might ponder this some more on a future blog post but don't want to appear sorry for myself. I've managed to avoid sentences starting with "If only...." and pretty sure I can avoid them now. As always, great to hear from you...Geoff and Brad,

As always, great to hear from you. Getting "older" isn't always bad, but being actually "old" ain't great. For most of my 75 years, I've taken for-granted my genetic "ability" to quickly heal from almost any kind of trauma. And I have pushed that luck hard often. This past year, and particularly, this past couple of months seem to be marking the end of my regenerative abilities. That is going to take some effort to get used to, as in finally listening to Mrs. Day's constantly nagging "Be careful!"

Weirdly, I kind of have to "thank" a bad reaction to working with concrete when we first moved to our current home (it really agitated the arthritis in my hands) and that long stint of wrestling with crap VW electronics in 2013-14 while we were trapped in New Mexico for a long winter. That warning flag and the extended "spare time" living in a dead camper put me back into music after 40 years on the "technical side of the glass." That and my usual distractions have made some of this letdown easier.

TomT.W. I'm 56, started riding in 1975 on a Honda Trail 70, got my first road bike at 17 (1972 Honda CB450) and have had a series of BMWs, Hondas, 1-Ducati and now an old Moto Guzzi that is a lot better than I would have expected, especially the brembo brakes. Retiring from riding 18 months ago after around 58 years in the saddle and currently recovering from a new knee have served up a different environment to get used to. I've also got to summon up the courage to get a slight heart flutter checked out. Nonetheless, having a couple of fall-back interests in terms of a classic car and sea fishing gives my wife and I stuff we can do together and not sit around waiting for the Grim Reaper. The same applies to EV cars/trucks. I live in SoCal and the cost of electricity is stupid.

This is why I just bought a new to me 2022 Tacoma. Time to retire my 2003 F250 7.3L diesel as I don't camp/tow anymore. I didn't want small engine turbos, or hybrid, or full EV. The US electricity grid is not ready for all these EV's at home sucking up the electricity. Hell, in SoCal we have had rolling blackouts during the summer months even before EV's became this popular. How can the masses NOT see that our electrical grid is from the 1900's? Why aren't the younger generations screaming to the government to start updating the grid using modern technology/standard. Heck a good solar storm could set us back 100 years.

Sorry, on my soap box there a bit.
